Harrison County, TX — A Harrison County grand jury has declined to indict five sheriff’s deputies involved in the July 10 fatal shooting of 23-year-old Jeshon Andrew Hamilton of Marshall following a foot pursuit and standoff.
Henderson County District Attorney Reid McCain said five Texas Rangers investigated the shooting, including investigators from Harrison, Gregg, Bowie and Smith counties. McCain confirmed Thursday that each of the five deputies was “no-billed” by the grand jury, meaning no criminal indictments were returned against them.
The incident began around 5 a.m. July 10 after the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a suspicious person in the Hillcrest Trails subdivision off FM 2879. Deputies later reported finding evidence of a break-in at an unoccupied home and received another report of someone trespassing.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies encountered Hamilton around 6:34 a.m. on Ella Kate Drive and a foot pursuit followed. Authorities said Hamilton was later seen holding a firearm to his head. The weapon was identified by investigators as having been stolen from a vehicle in the neighborhood the previous night.
The pursuit continued into a nearby construction site, where deputies attempted to use a less-lethal rubber projectile launcher. The Sheriff’s Office said the projectile grazed Hamilton before he allegedly pointed the firearm toward deputies, a K-9 and a lieutenant.
Five deputies then opened fire, fatally striking Hamilton. Deputies provided lifesaving measures until EMS arrived.
Following the Texas Rangers investigation, the case was presented to the Harrison County grand jury, which declined to indict the deputies.
