Bexar County, TX — A 26-year-old man has been arrested after investigators accused him of posing as a USAA employee and gaining a woman's trust before more than $14,000 was taken from her bank account.
According to an arrest affidavit, Haquilla Watson was arrested Tuesday on charges of Credit/Debit Card Abuse and Fraudulent Use of Identifying Information. The allegations stem from a June incident involving northeast Bexar County resident Denise Mumme.
Mumme said she received a phone call from a man claiming to work for USAA who told her there was a suspicious charge on her account. Believing she was speaking with a bank employee, she followed his instructions.
According to the affidavit, Watson allegedly hired an Uber driver, who authorities said was not involved in the scheme, to retrieve Mumme's debit card from her home.
Investigators later obtained surveillance video that allegedly showed the driver delivering an envelope containing the card to Watson outside a business at Quarry Market. Additional video allegedly showed Watson using the card to withdraw cash and make purchases totaling more than $14,000 at locations around San Antonio.
Mumme discovered the missing money two days after surrendering the card and contacted the Bexar County Sheriff's Office. She said the money has since been recovered.
FRAUD PREVENTION REMINDER
USAA warned that caller ID can be spoofed and said banks will not send an Uber, courier or other person to a customer's home to collect a debit or credit card. Customers should never provide PINs, passwords or one-time security codes to unexpected callers and should contact their bank directly through a trusted number or official app when in doubt.
The charges are allegations. Watson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
