Amarillo, TX — Two people, including an 8-year-old child, died following a major rollover crash Monday evening in the 4300 block of Canyon Drive, according to the Amarillo Police Department.
Officers responded around 6:02 p.m. August 31 to the northbound main lanes after receiving reports of a crash involving multiple people who had been ejected from a vehicle.
Police said a red Ford pickup carrying two adults and an 8-year-old child was traveling northbound alongside a black GMC SUV.
According to investigators, the Ford changed lanes when it was unsafe to do so, striking the GMC.
The GMC then hit the center concrete median, lost control and came to rest in the grassy median separating the northbound main lanes from the frontage road.
The Ford also lost control and rolled, ejecting all three occupants.
Authorities identified one of the victims as Alma Yazmin Peregrino Rivas, 41, who died at the scene.
The 8-year-old child was transported to a local hospital, where the child later died from injuries sustained in the crash.
A 44-year-old man was transported to Northwest Texas Healthcare System with life-threatening injuries and was later flown to Lubbock for additional treatment.
Investigators said they have not yet determined who was driving the Ford.
The driver of the GMC suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The Amarillo Police Department Traffic Investigation Unit continues to investigate the crash.
