Palo Pinto County, TX — Aircraft continue to play a major supporting role in the fight against the Ross Fire, which remains at 90,048 acres and 31% contained as of September 1, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service.
New footage shared by the agency shows a large airtanker making a retardant drop over the Ross Fire during operations on August 27.
Texas A&M Forest Service officials said aircraft are used to help slow a wildfire’s spread, protect critical areas and support firefighters and ground crews working toward containment.
Aerial resources are only one part of the overall firefighting strategy, with their use depending on safety, weather and terrain conditions.
