Abilene, TX — The Abilene Airtanker Base has loaded its 1 millionth gallon of retardant this year.

Texas A&M Forest Service said the base has been filling air tankers since Jan. 1 to help slow wildfires and support crews on the ground. The milestone came as Tanker 102 was loaded for the Ross Fire in Palo Pinto County.

Base manager James Black and his crew have been working around the clock.
