Potter County, TX — The Potter County Sheriff’s Office says 632 inmates are currently in county custody, highlighting continued challenges with overcrowding and available housing space at the Potter County Detention Center.

As of 8 a.m. Monday, August 31, 585 inmates were being housed inside the detention center, which has a rated capacity of 599. Another 47 inmates were being housed in other facilities.

The detention center’s current occupancy rate is 97.66%, while the seven-day average population is 615.

CURRENT POPULATION

• Total inmates in Potter County custody: 632
• Housed in Potter County Detention Center: 585
• Housed in other facilities: 47
• Rated jail capacity: 599
• Current occupancy rate: 97.66%
• Seven-day average population: 615

The Sheriff’s Office said managing the jail population involves more than the total number of available beds. Inmates must be housed according to classification and separation requirements, including security level, gender, medical needs, mental-health needs and other factors.

Officials said those requirements can prevent an otherwise open bed from being used for a particular inmate.

The Sheriff’s Office said it will continue providing weekly population reports as it works to address the ongoing housing challenges.
