Edinburg, TX — The Hidalgo County Courthouse will remain closed Tuesday, September 1, as county officials continue evaluating damage caused by a vehicle that crashed into the building’s front entrance Sunday night.
Hidalgo County said fire marshal and safety personnel, along with engineering professionals, are assessing the extent of the damage and determining whether the building is safe for employees and the public.
County Judge Richard F. Cortez said the courthouse will not reopen until the appropriate professionals complete their assessments and determine that operations can safely resume.
COURTHOUSE CLOSURE
Employees, jurors and members of the public who are scheduled to report to the courthouse Tuesday should not go to the building unless they receive specific instructions from the appropriate county office or court.
The county is continuing to coordinate with judicial leadership regarding court operations, scheduled hearings and jury proceedings affected by the closure.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation by the Edinburg Police Department.
Hidalgo County said additional updates on courthouse operations and reopening plans will be released as information becomes available.
