Victoria County, TX — Construction is underway on a new gateway monument that will welcome visitors to the Inez community, according to Victoria County officials.
Precinct 4 Commissioner Kenneth Sexton joined prospective Eagle Scout Michael Barjenbruch on Friday, August 28, for a groundbreaking ceremony marking the start of the project.
The approximately six-foot-tall monument is part of Barjenbruch’s Eagle Scout service project with Troop 364.
Barjenbruch first presented the idea to Victoria County Commissioners Court in April as a way to create a lasting landmark for Inez. Commissioners approved a donation agreement that month, allowing the project to move forward.
In the months that followed, Barjenbruch worked with local businesses and community members to secure monetary and in-kind donations, along with materials and services for the project.
He returned to Commissioners Court on August 10 with project plans and blueprints. The Court then approved agreements with TxDOT needed for construction.
Work has now begun with the monument’s concrete foundation.
Once construction is complete, Victoria County will assume ownership and responsibility for maintaining the monument.
Commissioner Sexton said the project will give Inez a landmark the community can be proud of for years to come while recognizing Barjenbruch’s work and the support of local residents and businesses.
