El Paso County, TX — A 20-year-old driver has been charged with two counts of Intoxication Assault with a Vehicle following a Can-Am rollover that injured five juvenile passengers, two of them seriously, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded around 12:15 p.m. Saturday, August 29, to a crash at Ponchatula and Mandeville. Special Traffic Investigators assumed the investigation.
Investigators said a black Can-Am Maverick driven by Jorge Alberto Gomez Alvarez was traveling westbound in the 14900 block of Mandeville with five passengers between the ages of 15 and 16.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Gomez Alvarez lost control of the off-road vehicle, causing it to roll several times.
All five juveniles were injured and transported to local hospitals for further medical evaluation. A 15-year-old and a 16-year-old sustained serious injuries.
Investigators determined Gomez Alvarez was intoxicated at the time of the crash. He was arrested and booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility.

The Sheriff’s Office noted that off-road vehicles such as the Can-Am are not permitted on public roadways.
The investigation remains ongoing.
All charges are allegations. Gomez Alvarez is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
