Van Zandt County, TX — A fast-moving wildfire that prompted evacuations and drew emergency crews from multiple counties has burned approximately 659 acres near Wills Point and is now 100% contained, according to the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office and Texas A&M Forest Service.
The fire began Thursday in the 3400 block of State Highway 64, outside Wills Point. The Wills Point Fire Department encountered a large grass and brush fire spreading rapidly through heavy fuel conditions, with multiple fires also reported along SH 64.
The size and rapid spread prompted a major mutual-aid response involving fire departments and emergency resources from Van Zandt County, Kaufman County and surrounding areas. Additional departments from Wood and Henderson counties assisted with overnight suppression operations.
Five firefighters received medical treatment during the incident and were transported to a local hospital. One suffered a heat-related injury overnight and was reported in stable condition. Officials said all five firefighters have either been released or are expected to be released.
Residents who had been asked to evacuate have been cleared to return home.
As of 7:15 a.m. Friday, approximately 659 acres had burned and the fire was 100% contained. Six engines and one dozer remained at the scene around 9 a.m. for mop-up operations and to strengthen containment lines.
The cause has not been determined. Officials believe the fire originated along the roadside of SH 64, and a Texas A&M Forest Service investigator is assisting the Van Zandt County Fire Marshal’s Office in determining its cause and origin.
