Austin, TX — The Public Safety Commission today confirmed Jason Bobo as chief of the Texas Rangers Division. He takes over Sept. 1 from Scotty Shiver, who is retiring after 31 years with DPS.
Bobo joined DPS in 1999 as a Highway Patrol trooper, later worked narcotics and auto theft as a sergeant, and became a Ranger in 2010. He led Company F’s crime scene team, served on the Rangers’ major crime scene team, and was named assistant chief in August 2025.
Shiver started as a trooper in Navasota in 1995, later worked motor vehicle theft and DPS SWAT, then served as a Ranger in Lubbock and Houston. He rose to captain and major over public integrity and special operations before becoming Capitol Region director in 2021 and Rangers chief in February 2024.
Ranger Maj. Kip Westmoreland will become assistant chief. He started with DPS in 1998, served as a Ranger in several cities, and most recently commanded Company A in Southeast Texas. He also worked with the Rangers reconnaissance team on the border and helped run the state’s Border Security Operations Center.
“We are not simply passing a title; we are passing the torch of a centuries-old legacy,” Col. Freeman F. Martin said.
Both new leaders will be based at DPS headquarters in Austin.
