Texas — Debris burning and equipment use are the leading causes of preventable wildfires in Texas from July through September, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service.
Farm equipment, lawn mowers and other machinery can ignite dry vegetation, particularly during hot and dry conditions. The agency recommends several precautions:
Keep equipment clean and free of debris, oil and grease buildup.
Keep a fire extinguisher on heavy equipment and make sure operators know how to use it.
Avoid idling equipment over dry grass or vegetation, where heat could ignite a fire.
Have someone on-site watching for signs of ignition when possible.
Schedule heavy equipment work during the cooler, more humid early-morning hours when possible.
A small spark can quickly become a wildfire under the right conditions. Taking precautions while working outdoors can help protect property, communities and Texas landscapes.
