Fort Worth, TX — A North Richland Hills family’s overnight trip to South Padre Island ended in tragedy after a wrong-way driver crashed head-on into their vehicle on State Highway 121, killing a mother and grandmother and seriously injuring an 11-year-old girl.

According to the Fort Worth Police Department, the crash happened shortly after 1:20 a.m. near North Riverside Drive. Investigators said the driver of a Jeep was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Highway 121.

Police said the Jeep first sideswiped another vehicle carrying three people as its driver attempted to avoid the wrong-way SUV. None of those occupants suffered major injuries.

The Jeep continued traveling the wrong way before crashing head-on into a four-door sedan carrying the North Richland Hills family.

The Jeep driver and two passengers in the sedan — identified by family friends as the family’s mother and grandmother — died at the scene. An adult male driving the sedan and an 11-year-old girl were transported to local hospitals.

According to TxDOT, a sensor detected the wrong-way vehicle, and the agency placed the first 911 call before the fatal collision.

Fort Worth police are continuing to investigate the crash and are asking anyone with video or additional information to contact investigators.
