Houston, TX — Mayor John Whitmire has proclaimed August 2026 as National Emergency Management Awareness Month in Houston, recognizing the emergency management professionals, first responders, volunteers and partner organizations that work throughout the year to prepare the city for disasters and emergencies.

The proclamation also highlights the City of Houston Office of Emergency Management and its coordination with local, state, federal, nonprofit and private-sector partners to strengthen preparedness and emergency response.

Officials are encouraging Houstonians to take four preparedness steps:

• Make a plan
• Stay informed
• Build an emergency kit
• Get connected

The initiative emphasizes that disaster preparedness is a shared responsibility and encourages residents to prepare themselves, their families and their neighbors before an emergency occurs.
