Rusk, TX — A Cherokee County correctional officer has been arrested and accused of having an improper sexual relationship with an inmate, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said.
Clare Scroggins, 28, of Palestine, was booked into the Anderson County Jail on Thursday and later released on a $10,000 bond, jail records show. She is accused of violating the civil rights of a person in custody by engaging in improper sexual activity, a second-degree felony.
Jail administration notified Sheriff Brent Dickson on August 12, and Justice of the Peace Brenda Dominy issued a warrant the following day, according to the sheriff’s office. Scroggins turned herself in to the Anderson County Jail on Thursday.
If convicted, she could face two to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. She is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
