Weslaco, TX — The City of Weslaco is recognizing Weslaco Police Department Lieutenant Karina Elizondo for her actions during a mental health crisis at Isaac Rodriguez Park.
According to the city, Elizondo was off duty on June 1, 2025, when she became aware of a critical situation involving an individual she recognized from previous encounters.
Elizondo reported to work and established communication with the individual by phone, remaining in contact while encouraging the person to stay safe until Weslaco Fire Department rescue personnel were able to make contact.
City officials said her response demonstrated patience, courage, compassion and a commitment to preserving life.
Elizondo has nearly 17 years of service with the Weslaco Police Department and 18 years in law enforcement.
Mayor Adrian Gonzalez, the Weslaco City Commission and the city recognized Elizondo for her continued dedication to protecting and serving the community.
