Pharr, TX — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than 1,675 pounds of alleged methamphetamine concealed within a commercial shipment of fresh celery at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility.

According to CBP, the seizure occurred August 15 after officers encountered a tractor-trailer arriving from Reynosa, Mexico, with a shipment manifested as fresh celery.

The vehicle was referred for a secondary inspection using nonintrusive inspection equipment, which detected anomalies within the shipment.

A subsequent physical inspection uncovered 721 packages containing alleged methamphetamine concealed among the cargo.

• 1,675.51 pounds (760 kilograms) of alleged methamphetamine
• Estimated value: $14,978,000

CBP officers seized the narcotics and the vehicle.

Special agents with Homeland Security Investigations have initiated a criminal investigation.
