Mineola, TX — Republic Services has fired employees accused of going through residents’ trash while providing garbage collection service in Mineola, according to a statement shared by the city Tuesday.

The City of Mineola said concerns were raised after a community social media post reported Republic Services employees going through residents’ garbage.

According to the statement, Republic Services has a strict policy prohibiting that type of activity, and the employees involved were terminated effective immediately.

City officials later clarified that the employees were not accused of doing anything illegal. Instead, officials said their actions violated a company policy intended to protect customers’ privacy.

The situation may also affect Tuesday’s garbage collection, with the city warning that Aug. 18 service could be delayed following the terminations.

The city thanked residents who reported the issue and credited Republic Services for responding quickly.
