North Richland Hills, TX — The North Richland Hills Police Department is mourning the loss of Patrol K-9 Koba, a 12-year-old Belgian Malinois who served the community for more than a decade alongside his handler, Officer Lizak.

Koba and Officer Lizak began training together in June 2016. During their years as a team, they assisted with numerous arrests and apprehensions and worked alongside multiple law enforcement agencies on patrol and narcotics detection operations.

Koba was wounded in the line of duty in 2019 when he was shot while responding to an armed suicidal subject. He later received the Police Commendation Bar for his actions during the incident.

In late July, Koba began showing signs of a medical problem. Veterinary testing confirmed cancer that had progressed beyond treatment. He spent his final weeks at home with his family, where the department said he enjoyed plenty of love — and a few steak dinners.

Koba died peacefully during the early morning hours of Aug. 18, 2026.

"K-9 Koba was more than just a working patrol dog; he was a steadfast protector, a trusted partner, and a deeply beloved member of our department," Chief Garner said, praising the teamwork and bond between Koba and Officer Lizak.

Koba became the first NRHPD patrol K-9 to die while still in active service. He had been scheduled to retire in October.

The department said fellow K-9 Luka will continue the work of locating suspects and detecting dangerous drugs.

Those wishing to support NRHPD's K-9 teams may contribute to the North Richland Hills Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association K-9 fund. Venmo donations can be sent to @CPAAA-4301 with "K9" included in the note.
