Denison, TX — What began as a routine medical call for a lift assist quickly turned into a life-saving rescue after Denison firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke pouring from a home.
According to Denison Fire Rescue, an elderly resident had fallen while cooking and was unable to turn off the stove. A fire started and filled the home with dense smoke down to the floor, leaving the resident trapped near the source of the fire and unable to get herself to safety.
Firefighters Blake Wilson and Damon Moorehall recognized the danger, requested additional resources and forced entry through the front door.
In zero-visibility conditions, the firefighters entered the smoke-filled home, located the resident and carried her outside to safety.
Their response continued before an additional engine arrived. Wilson and Moorehall grabbed a garden hose from the property and began knocking down the fire, helping prevent it from spreading further and limiting additional damage to the home.
The resident later told the department that their quick actions saved her life.
Denison Fire Rescue recognized Wilson, Moorehall and the entire Station 1 crew for their actions during the emergency.
