Robertson County, TX – The Robertson County Sheriff’s Office says a mass gathering permit for the Texas Trail Ride was canceled after authorities received information about threats of another shooting connected to an earlier deadly incident in another jurisdiction.

According to Sheriff Bill Ruland, the Sheriff’s Office was contacted by another law enforcement agency on Aug. 11, 2026, regarding a threat involving a potential shooting. Authorities said the threat was believed to be retaliation for an Aug. 8 shooting in another jurisdiction that left one person dead and numerous others wounded.

The location identified in the new threat was the Texas Trail Ride, which was scheduled for Aug. 15 in unincorporated Robertson County.

At approximately 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 15, the Sheriff’s Office was contacted again by the other agency and advised that two additional shootings had occurred the previous night in connection with the Aug. 8 incident. No casualties were reported in those two shootings, according to the release.

Authorities said the threats of retaliation had increased following the additional violence.

After being briefed on the new information, Sheriff Ruland met with the Robertson County Judge. Officials determined that rescinding the event’s mass gathering permit was the most prudent action to protect the community and reduce the possibility of a mass-casualty event.

The Sheriff emphasized that the decision was not a reflection on the organizers of the Texas Trail Ride, saying the organizers have previously conducted their trail rides safely and properly.

The Sheriff’s Office did not identify the jurisdiction where the shootings occurred or provide additional details about the underlying incidents in its release.
