Texas — A carefully restored 1986 Ford Mustang SSP is offering Texans a look back at an era when specially equipped Mustangs patrolled highways across the state.
Known as Mustang M6-380, the vehicle once served with the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol and is one of 415 Mustang SSPs produced by Ford that year, according to Texas DPS.
SSP stood for Special Service Package, a version of the Mustang developed for law enforcement use.
Today, M6-380 has been preserved by its current owner, retired law enforcement officer Robert Arena, with help from others who share an interest in preserving law enforcement history.
Texas DPS highlighted the restoration Monday, noting the attention given to preserving the vehicle and its history.
The department also announced that it plans to share a closer look inside M6-380 next week, including vintage equipment, artifacts and other details associated with the former patrol vehicle.
