Cherokee County, TX – A 56-year-old Lufkin man was killed early Monday morning after his SUV left U.S. Highway 69 and struck a tree north of Rusk, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

DPS troopers responded to the single-vehicle crash at approximately 1:43 a.m. on Aug. 17, about two miles north of Rusk.

A preliminary investigation indicates a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling south on U.S. 69 when it failed to maintain a single lane, left the roadway and struck a tree.

The driver, identified as Michael Campbell, 56, of Lufkin, was pronounced dead at the scene.

DPS said the investigation remains active.
