Hays County, TX — The Texas Department of Public Safety is conducting a criminal investigation following the death of an inmate at the Hays County Jail early Sunday morning.
According to the Hays County Sheriff’s Office, the inmate was discovered unresponsive during routine checks at approximately 3:26 a.m. on August 16. CPR was administered and EMS was called, but the inmate could not be resuscitated and was pronounced deceased by a justice of the peace.
The Sheriff’s Office said the inmate was housed alone and had appeared normal during a previous check conducted at approximately 3:12 a.m.
No foul play is suspected, and the preliminary investigation suggests the inmate died of natural causes.
As required following a custodial death at the jail, DPS is conducting a criminal investigation. The Hays County Sheriff’s Office Office of Professional Responsibility is also conducting an internal investigation to determine whether all policies and procedures were followed.
The inmate’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
