Laredo, TX — A man charged with capital murder in the 2025 killing of 20-year-old Frida Castillo is scheduled to return to court Monday, August 17, when the case could end with a plea agreement or proceed to a jury trial.
Fernando Machado is charged with capital murder in connection with Castillo's death inside a Laredo home in March 2025. Castillo's mother and brother were also seriously injured during the attack.
Machado is additionally accused of opening fire on police following the incident. He faces a total of 27 felony charges and has remained in custody without bond since his arrest.
Prosecutors have said they will not seek the death penalty.
Both sides are scheduled to appear at 9:30 a.m. Monday in the 406th District Court. If a plea agreement is not reached, the case is expected to proceed to a jury trial.
Charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
