Corpus Christi, TX — Two people were killed Friday afternoon in a four-vehicle crash on State Highway 361 near Corpus Christi Fire Station 16 and Beach Access Road 2.
The crash was reported shortly after 3:40 p.m.
Corpus Christi police said two people were pronounced dead at the scene.
Traffic investigators are working to determine what caused the crash.
Both directions of Highway 361 remain closed while investigators work at the scene, and drivers are being asked to avoid the area and use an alternate route.
Friday’s crash is the second fatal collision reported along the same stretch of Highway 361 this week.
On Monday, 59-year-old Jarrod Fangman was killed in a separate two-vehicle crash near Beach Access Road 2. Police said the other driver crossed into the northbound lane before striking Fangman’s vehicle. That driver suffered serious injuries.
Police said alcohol was not believed to be a factor in Monday’s crash.
The recent fatal crashes have renewed calls from Padre Island residents for safety improvements along Highway 361. A petition seeking changes has collected more than 500 signatures.
State Rep. Todd Hunter has said he plans to pursue state funding for additional lighting along the highway, while TxDOT is considering potential modifications to the corridor.
