Vernon, TX — Vernon Emergency Services responded to two grass fires Friday afternoon that authorities believe were caused by lawnmowers throwing sparks.
Officials warned that extreme heat and very dry conditions can allow even a small spark to ignite a fast-moving grass fire.
A mower blade striking a rock or another hard object can produce enough of a spark to start a fire in dry vegetation.
Both fires happened near Vernon Auto Group Ford, prompting Vernon Police to add a little humor to the warning by joking that the dealership’s deals were “so hot” they were catching the area on fire.
Authorities emphasized that Vernon Auto Group was not responsible for the fires.
Fire Safety Reminder:
Residents are encouraged to avoid mowing dry grass during the hottest part of the day and postpone activities that could create sparks or open flames.
If mowing is necessary, use extra caution, check the area for rocks and debris, and keep a water source or fire extinguisher nearby.
One small spark can become a large fire very quickly.
