Hutto, TX — An overturned 18-wheeler carrying liquid nitrogen prompted an overnight hazardous materials response and temporary closure of Highway 79 in Hutto.

According to Hutto Fire Rescue (Williamson County ESD #3), crews and the Hutto Police Department responded around 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, to the railroad crossing at Highway 79 and FM 1660 South.

Liquid nitrogen began leaking from the trailer following the crash. Fire crews established a safety perimeter, closed Highway 79 and worked to mitigate the leak and secure the scene.

Officials said no train was involved and no injuries were reported.

The truck was removed around 5 a.m. Friday, and Highway 79 was reopened.

Railroad Crossing Damage

The crash damaged a railroad crossing arm. Until Union Pacific completes repairs, trains will be required to travel through the crossing at reduced speeds, which could result in additional traffic delays.

Drivers should remain alert and be prepared for possible delays around the crossing.
