Nueces County, TX — A large beach nourishment proposal under state coastal review could place nearly 780,000 cubic yards of beach-quality sand along portions of Mustang Island and North Padre Island.
According to an Aug. 14 Texas Register notice, Nueces County Coastal Parks is proposing to place up to approximately 779,671 cubic yards of sand across about 163.74 acres of Gulf beach and nearshore areas in Nueces and Kleberg counties.
Proposed project areas include:
• North Port Aransas Jetty to Lantana Drive
• Newport Pass Road to Marker 203
• Access Road 4 to Access Road 6
• Access Road 6 to Marker 253
The proposal is intended to:
• Restore beach width
• Reduce storm-related beach loss
• Maintain public beach access
• Improve shoreline resilience
The final source of the sand has not yet been selected.
Construction methods and the final construction schedule also remain undetermined.
The project is still in the proposal and coastal review stage. Construction has not been confirmed as underway, and the notice does not establish that final approval has been granted.
Public comments are being accepted through Sept. 6, 2026.
