Athens, TX — George Monterrey Jones was sentenced this week to 20 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance.
Jones was sentenced by 3rd District Court Judge Mark Calhoon. Assistant District Attorney Jeff Herrington represented the State.
The case stemmed from a Jan. 28 incident in Athens.
According to the Henderson County District Attorney’s Office, K9 Deputy Edwin Rodriguez with the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office was patrolling East Tyler Street when he observed what appeared to be a drug transaction involving a woman who approached the passenger side of a vehicle.
Rodriguez recognized Jones as the passenger and knew he had an active warrant.
When the deputy activated his emergency lights, authorities said Jones threw an object from the vehicle.
The District Attorney’s Office said Jones later admitted to selling drugs.
Investigators subsequently obtained a search warrant based on Jones’ statements. Henderson County Investigator J. Barrios located additional methamphetamine inside an apartment.
Jones was arrested and charged in connection with 26.3 grams of methamphetamine.
Court officials said Jones had five prior convictions for possession of a controlled substance, along with previous convictions for unlawfully carrying a weapon and theft.
