Houston, TX — An armed suspect was shot by Houston police officers and a Texas DPS trooper Friday after authorities said he opened fire on multiple moving vehicles, leaving three people wounded.
Houston Police Department Assistant Chief Yasser Bashir said officers began receiving multiple calls around 11:02 a.m. reporting a man firing at a moving vehicle with what was described as an automatic weapon.
Officers arrived within minutes and located the suspect. According to HPD, officers gave verbal commands and ordered him to drop the weapon before the encounter escalated and law enforcement opened fire.
Three HPD officers and one Texas DPS trooper discharged their weapons.
The suspect was struck more than once and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Before officers arrived, police said the suspect fired at three moving vehicles.
Three people in two of those vehicles were struck and were reported in stable condition after receiving medical treatment. One vehicle carried a mother and daughter who were both wounded. A third person was wounded in another vehicle.
No occupants were injured in the third vehicle.
No HPD officers or the DPS trooper were injured.
HPD’s Special Investigations Unit, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, HPD Internal Affairs and the Texas Rangers are conducting parallel investigations under department policy.
Police said body-worn camera footage from the incident is expected to be released within 30 days.
