Salado, TX — Two people were killed Wednesday afternoon after an Apache military helicopter crashed in a field near Salado, according to the Bell County Sheriff’s Office.
The helicopter went down off Dove Hollow Lane near Farm to Market Road 2843.
Bell County authorities described the crash as violent and confirmed both occupants were killed. No identities have been released.
Grass Fire and Evacuations:
The crash sparked a grass fire in the surrounding area. Authorities reported the fire was large and out of control as emergency crews responded.
Several nearby homes were evacuated because of the fire.
Road Closure:
FM 2843 is currently closed near the crash site.
Active Emergency Scene:
Drivers and residents should avoid the area, obey road closures and give firefighters, law enforcement and other emergency personnel room to work.
No additional information about the helicopter, the people aboard or the circumstances leading to the crash has been released.
