Keller, TX — Keller Public Safety is reminding residents that strong criticism of government officials and public decisions is protected speech, but threats of violence can cross into criminal conduct under Texas law.
The reminder comes after Keller police were notified of statements made during an online discussion involving a controversial development project. According to the department, an individual allegedly made threats of violence against members of the Westlake Town Council.
Keller police said officers identified the individual and made in-person contact.
Because the alleged threats specifically involved elected officials, the department said the allegations rose to the level of a felony offense. The matter remains an ongoing criminal case.
Texas Law:
Keller Public Safety cited Texas Penal Code §22.07, Terroristic Threat, which addresses certain threats to commit violence when made with legally defined intent, including circumstances involving fear of serious bodily injury or attempts to influence the actions of a governmental entity.
The department emphasized that statements made on social media are not exempt from the law and can carry the same consequences as statements made in person.
