Eagle Pass, TX — A woman was arrested after Eagle Pass police responding to a welfare check allegedly found her 11-year-old and 2-year-old children alone inside a residence late Sunday night.

According to the Eagle Pass Police Department, officers responded at approximately 11:01 p.m. Aug. 9 to a home in the 1100 block of Crown Hill. Police said both children were inside without adult supervision.

The 11-year-old reportedly told officers he had made several unsuccessful attempts to contact his mother before eventually reaching her by phone. She told him she was on her way home but had not arrived while officers were conducting the welfare check.

EMS personnel were called to evaluate both children. During the assessment, authorities said the 2-year-old was found with a soiled diaper that appeared not to have been changed for an extended period.

At approximately 12:29 a.m., Martha Catalina Reyes arrived at the residence and reportedly told officers she had been in Mexico.

Police arrested Reyes and notified Child Protective Services. She was formally charged with Abandoning or Endangering a Child with Intent to Return, a state jail felony.

The children were released into the custody of a family member who arrived at the scene.

Reyes was booked into the Tom Bowles Detention Center in lieu of a $10,000 bond. Police said the case will be referred to the Maverick County District Attorney’s Office for review and prosecution.

Reyes is accused of a crime and is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
