Tarrant County, TX — A woman who remained a fugitive for decades after being indicted in connection with the 1996 death of her 3-year-old daughter has been captured in Mexico, according to the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office.
Maria Narez, 48, was indicted by the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office in 1999 on a capital murder charge in connection with the death of her daughter, Kassandra White.
According to the district attorney’s office, Narez fled before the case could go to trial and remained a fugitive for decades.
Authorities announced that Narez was arrested Saturday in Mexico.
The Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office credited Mexico Interpol, the U.S. Marshals Mexico Foreign Field Office, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Department of Justice Office of International Affairs, DA investigators Tiffany Johnson and Victor Espino-Nevarez, and Assistant District Attorney Steven Elliott with efforts to bring Narez back to face the charge.
The district attorney’s office said the case continued to be pursued despite the decades that had passed.
