Randall County, TX — A woman convicted of injuring her 2-year-old child has been sentenced to the maximum punishment allowed for the offense, according to the Randall County District Attorney’s Office.
On Wednesday, Aug. 5, a Randall County jury found Mariam Nabil Abdelhamid guilty of Injury to a Child with Intent to Cause Bodily Injury, a third-degree felony.
The jury sentenced Abdelhamid to 10 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and imposed a $10,000 fine. The offense carries a punishment range of two to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
According to prosecutors, the case began in March 2025 when Abdelhamid took her 2-year-old child to daycare with a hand-shaped bruise on the left side of his face.
When daycare staff questioned her about the injury, prosecutors said Abdelhamid claimed the child had fallen down a flight of concrete stairs. However, authorities said the child had no other bruises, bumps or scrapes on his body.
During trial, jurors reviewed photographic evidence and heard testimony from the daycare owner, law enforcement and a child abuse pediatric doctor before finding Abdelhamid guilty.
During the punishment phase, the child’s father asked jurors to consider probation so the child could eventually be returned to Abdelhamid. According to the district attorney’s office, the father testified that he had never witnessed her abuse the child.
However, prosecutors said the father acknowledged during cross-examination that Abdelhamid had previously strangled him and stabbed him multiple times with a knife.
The district attorney’s office argued against probation, and the jury ultimately imposed the maximum prison sentence and fine permitted for the offense.
Prosecutors credited the daycare staff’s decision to report the child’s injuries with bringing the case to authorities.
