Smith County, TX — One person was killed Sunday afternoon after a small plane crashed in a rural area of Smith County between Arp and Overton, according to local officials.
The crash occurred shortly before 5 p.m. in a field off County Road 227.
Smith County Justice of the Peace Precinct 4 Curtis Wulf confirmed that one person was aboard the aircraft and was killed in the crash.
Earlier reports initially indicated two people may have been aboard the plane, but officials have since confirmed there was only one occupant.
The National Transportation Safety Board identified the aircraft as an Avid Mark IV experimental airplane, a single-engine, two-seat kit plane.
Smith County Emergency Services, Texas DPS, the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, UT Health and a Texas game warden responded to the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Federal Aviation Administration is responding, and additional information is expected as the investigation continues.
