Crockett, TX — A 66-year-old Crockett man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after a jury found him guilty of capital murder in the 2024 killing of 78-year-old Herbert “Andy” Allen.
According to the Crockett Police Department, Roberts Lee Steveson was convicted following a weeklong trial. The capital murder conviction resulted in an automatic sentence of life without parole.
Allen was found dead inside his Crockett home by family members in May 2024 with severe injuries to his head and face.
Police said evidence presented at trial showed Steveson burglarized Allen’s home on the night of May 21, 2024. During the burglary, a violent assault occurred that ultimately resulted in Allen’s death.
Investigators identified Steveson as a person of interest during the investigation, and he was later charged in connection with the killing.
Police also said Steveson had prior convictions from the 1970s in Trinity County, including sexual assault and murder, and was on parole at the time of Allen’s killing. According to the department, jurors in the capital murder trial were not told about those prior convictions or his parole status.
The Texas Attorney General’s Office prosecuted the case.
