Gregg County, TX — A Longview man was killed early Friday morning after his vehicle crashed into the back of an 18-wheeler on Interstate 20, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

DPS said troopers responded around 1:13 a.m. on Aug. 7 to the westbound lanes of I-20 near mile marker 583, close to Old Highway 135.

Preliminary information indicates a tractor-trailer and a Chevrolet Camaro were both traveling westbound when the Camaro's driver, identified as 39-year-old Mark Schaefer of Longview, allegedly failed to control his speed and struck the rear of the 18-wheeler.

Schaefer was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
