Montgomery County, TX — A former Montgomery County Sheriff's Office detention officer has been arrested following an investigation into the alleged assault of an inmate at the Montgomery County Jail.
According to the Sheriff's Office, 27-year-old Miguel Cortez-Gonzales was taken into custody on Aug. 7 and charged with Violation of Civil Rights of Person in Custody, a third-degree felony.
Authorities said the charge stems from an incident on July 24, 2026, when Cortez-Gonzales allegedly assaulted an inmate while working as a detention officer.
The Sheriff's Office said the 25-year-old inmate suffered minor injuries, received medical treatment, and is in good health. The inmate's identity has not been released to protect the victim's privacy.
An internal investigation was launched immediately after the incident. Detectives with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit conducted the criminal investigation, which resulted in Cortez-Gonzales' arrest.
Sheriff Wesley Doolittle said the agency remains committed to accountability and transparency, adding that misconduct involving individuals in custody will not be tolerated.
The investigation remains active.
All criminal charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
