Tyler, TX — A 33-year-old man pleaded guilty Monday after authorities accused him of convincing a 71-year-old woman to pay $64,000 for roof repairs that contractors later determined were unnecessary.
Levy Aaron Lee pleaded guilty to financial abuse of an elderly person involving $30,000 or more but less than $150,000.
According to an arrest affidavit, Lee and another person told the woman that her roof was unstable and collected six checks and $14,000 in cash for the purported repairs.
Investigators said the men caused damage to the roof and attempted to conceal it using approximately $1,800 in paint, roofing tiles, and uneven plywood.
Independent contractors later testified that the roof did not need repairs before the damage occurred and that the amount paid by the victim could have purchased approximately four new roofs.
Under a plea agreement, Lee would receive five years of probation and be required to repay the woman $64,000. A formal sentencing hearing is scheduled for Aug. 27.
