Commerce police arrested Michael L. Winton after an investigation into a reported robbery, burglary and shooting July 27.
Officers received the report at approximately 9 p.m. in the 900 block of Plum Street. They found a man with multiple gunshot wounds in the 1000 block of Cedar Street. Commerce Fire and EMS assisted, and the man was transported for medical treatment.
According to the Commerce Police Department, investigators determined that a man approached a residence, entered it and held the occupants at gunpoint while demanding items. Police said the man fired at the occupants, who returned fire and struck him. He then fled on foot.
Commerce police and the Texas Rangers investigated and processed the scene. An officer obtained arrest warrants for Winton on charges of burglary of a habitation with intent to commit a felony, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
Police said Winton has been taken into custody on the warrants. The investigation remains ongoing.
