A 16-year-old La Vernia High School student was killed early Sunday morning after the vehicle she was driving struck a city welcome sign and rolled over, according to the La Vernia Police Department.
The crash happened just before 4 a.m. in the 12000 block of U.S. Highway 87 near East Chihuahua Street. Responders found a 2015 Lexus RX3 rolled onto its side and on fire, police said.
The girl was the vehicle’s only occupant and was found dead inside. Police have not released her identity.
Investigators said the vehicle was traveling northbound when it left the roadway for an unknown reason, entered a grassy area and struck a brick-and-mortar sign reading “City of La Vernia” before rolling over.
In a statement, a La Vernia Independent School District spokesperson said counseling resources would be available for students and staff. The district said it was working to support students, staff and families as the new school year began.
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy,” the district said. “Our campus teams are prepared to provide counseling resources for students and staff, with additional support available through neighboring school districts if needed.”
Additional information was not immediately available. The Texas Department of Public Safety is leading the investigation.
